A Slice of Brooklyn Comes to Denver at DC Pie Co.
DC Pie Co. hasn’t been open long in Denver, but we’re already warming up to those smoky, crunchy slices of thin brick oven pizza. Now that warmer weather is here, we can enjoy these pizzas and fresh salads on the sidewalk patio. Let’s get to know our new neighbor from The Empire State.
Opened in October 2018, DC Pie Co. is named for Dominic Cavagnulo, who grew up eating Italian brick oven pizzas in Brooklyn and has a restaurant in Miami. While the menu is simple, the dishes are delicious and the drinks refreshing.
Pizzas come in one size only, perfect for two or three people, and start at $15 for a plain pie. Then guests can build their own pies with a choice of veggies, pepperoni, sausage, or crumbled meatball for $2 additional each item. Italian artichoke hearts are $3 extra. Guests can also get extra cheese and house sauces for $1-6.
The restaurant is almost as famous for its giant salads as it is the pizza. The Kale Caesar is the most popular of the bunch piled high with crunchy kale leaves and parmesan reggiano cheese. The mixed green Summer Salad features pine nuts, blue cheese, and tasty pieces of candied garlic. Other salads include Watercress and Pear, Escarole, and House. All salads are $8 except the Italian standard Bufala Mozzarella and Tomato plate for $14.
For appetizers enjoy baked 100% beef meatballs, hot wings, and crunchy pepperoni chips.
The drinks are just as simple and delicious as the food featuring a selection of white and red wines by both glass and bottle and beer that represents Colorado, the east coast, and Italy. Seven types of beer are on draft and seven beers are in cans. DC cocktails are modern twists on classic concoctions like the DCP Manhattan, Back to the Beach, and the Garden Gimlet. For spring and summer, the bar is offering a new soda and spritz menu featuring five flavorful soda combinations that you can get alcohol free for $4 or add alcohol for $8. A carafe that serves two is $18.
The golden colored Cucumber & Mint with St. Germain is cool and refreshing with a savory pizza and easy drinking on a warm day. The Blueberry & Basil with Breckenridge Gin is sweet yet garden-y with a lovely light pink color. The Basil & Lemon with Campari makes for a slightly bitter citrus drink. Its reddish color is reminiscent of a Negroni. The Jalapeno & Citrus is a staff favorite at DC Pie made spritz with the addition of both mescal for smoke and St. Germain for sweetness. The Raspberry & Lime is the closest to a traditional Italian spritzer with the additional of Aperol making a bright, fruity citrus drink.
Happy hour at DC Pie Co features draft beers for $5 and cocktails for $8. Snack on wings for $8 and meatballs for $7 and pepperoni chips are only $5. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 6 PM. DC Pie is now open Monday through Wednesday from 4 to 10 PM, Thursday and Friday for lunch beginning at noon until 10 PM, Saturday from 11 AM to 11 PM and Sunday from 11 AM to 9 PM.
