A Rare Sam Adams Beer, Utopia, Is Being Released
Sam Adams has released their biennial Utopias beer, a barrel aged ale that is illegal in 12 states due to its high alcohol content.
The highly sought-after beer clocks in at 28% ABV and it’s suggested to be enjoyed in one ounce pours. Only 68 casks of Utopias were made in 2017, which means only 13,000 bottles will be available nationwide for purchase. That of course excludes Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Washington where it is illegal to sell beer at that high of an ABV.
"My original idea for Utopias was to push the boundaries of craft beer by brewing an extreme beer that was unlike anything any brewer had conceived,” said Jim Koch, founder of Boston Beer Co., to Fortune.com. “I’m proud to present to drinkers this lunatic fringe of extreme beer worthy of the Utopias name.”
The beer has a taste much more like a liquor and cannot be carbonated due to it’s ABV. The final Utopias product is a blend of previous barrel-aged vintages and was finished in Moscat barrels.
If you’re lucky enough to grab a bottle of this rare $199 beer, cheers! Use this Sam Adams beer finder to see if you can find it anywhere near you.
