California Wildfires Burn 150,000 Acres, Majorly Affecting Vineyards Throughout Wine Country

Wildfires continue to rip through northern and parts of southern California today, after starting on Sunday, October 8, CNN reports. Both Napa and Sonoma County have been affected, with a reported death toll of fifteen, the displacement of thousands, and the loss of at least two thousand homes, most of which were in wine country. While the fires have yet to be contained, CNBC reports that improving wind and temperature conditions will aid firefighters in their crucial work.
In addition to the tragic loss of life, California’s major wine region, once a pinnacle of the nation’s wine production as well as an essential part of the state’s economy and the livelihood of the thousands who live and work there, is likely annihilated. According to CNBC, “The status of the grape crop currently being harvested in Napa and Sonoma, where the largest fires burned, was unclear.”
Vineyards that have been affected by this tragedy include the William Hill Estate Winery, E. & J. Gallo, and Signorello Estates, among others. Reports say that the White House will be working to send federal aid to California.
