The First Annual Red Rocks BBQ & Brewfest is Coming to Denver, April 22

With a plethora of beer festivals in Colorado, organizers need to find a niche in order to have any chance of survival. Here’s one: Have a beer festival at the world’s greatest outdoor concert venue—Red Rocks Amphitheatre, pair the brew with barbecue, and, of course, music.

That’s the recipe organizers hope will mean success for the first Red Rocks BBQ & Brewfest, which will serve up malt and meat on Saturday, April 22 from 12 PM – 4 PM. Organizers have smoked out 30 different breweries while the ‘cue will be prepared by Executive Chef John Loukas of the venue’s Ship Rock Grille.

For obvious reasons, Morrissey will not be part of the festivities, but there will be music by Safe Under the Tree—a band anchored by Red Rocks employee Joe Mulhern.

“Red Rocks is the most beautiful venue in Colorado, if not in the whole world,” says Melissa Schulz, director of operations with Aramark at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. “We have so many amazing breweries right here in our own backyard and this gives us a chance to offer more than just a concert experience. Our facilities allow us to accommodate a wide variety of events and we wanted to showcase our abilities. This is not the only non-concert event we will have this year.”

A quick glance of the breweries shows a heavy dose of local flavor with some national faves thrown in. Check it out: MillerCoors, Blue Moon, AC Golden, Boulder Beer, Oskar Blues, New Belgium, Lagunitas, Boston Beer, Tommy Knocker, HUSA, Pabst, Constellation, Prost, Alaskan, Sierra Nevada, Bootstrap, Seattle Cider Company, Anchor Steam, Perrin, Warsteiner, Odell, Ska, Denver Beer Company, Dogfish Head, Lefthand, Victory, Upslope, Boulevard, Bristol and Ninkasi.

Tickets get you a glass, 15 samples and a BBQ lunch. Discounted tickets at $40 are available through April 19 while regular-price tickets at $50 will be available April 19-22 at redrocksonline.com. Taxes and fees apply. Parking is available in Red Rocks’ upper north lot.

The brewfest takes place rain or shine, so prepare for the weather. Organizers say sunscreen and an extra layer is never a bad idea. (Take that advice. Oh, and maybe pack a rain poncho, too.)

It all sounds like the kind of event that could leave patrons seeing red—red meat, red ale and Red Rocks, that is.
