Whiskey Lovers Rejoice, Buffalo Trace Unveils Antique Collection

by Alexander Frane on Sep 13, 2016 in Liquor

Lovers of whiskey, particularly bourbons and ryes, are likely familiar with the Buffalo Trace line of products, which includes the eponymous bottle as well as labels such as Eagle Rare and George T. Stagg. Right now is a great time to a be a fan as the brand just announced its 2016 antique collection release, which includes five different limited editions bottles.

The “powerhouse favorite” of the bunch is the George T. Stagg; the whiskey is barrel proof, meaning it’s not cut with water, and unfiltered, standing at 144 proof! Due to some “greedy angels” (ie, lots of evaporation), there are only 142 barrels, and Buffalo Trace warns that the bottles will be difficult to find.

Others include the uncut 126 proof Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye, the 2015 batch of which won “Best American Rye Whiskey” in the World Whiskey Awards; the unfiltered William Larue Weller wheated bourbon, which won Bourbon of the Year from Jim Murray’s 2016 Whiskey Bible; the Eagle Rare 17 year old, at a reasonable 90 proof; and the Sazerac Rye 18 year old.

The costs are surprisingly reasonable, with a suggested $90 retail price. They are set to be released in late September and early October, but no word yet on where you can find them. Your best shot would be to visit the distillery itself.
