The Essence of San Francisco Fog is Now in Vodka Form

by Alexander Frane on Jun 7, 2016 in Culture

Do you love the iconic fog of San Francisco so much that you long to imbibe it in alcohol form? Well, thanks to Hangar One Vodka and distiller Caley Shoemaker, now you can. Shoemaker has made a vodka using water from the fog over the San Francisco bay. It’s called Fog Point Vodka.

The Hangar One team, along with FogQuest, a conservation charity, hung up fog-catchers around the bay area, which are the same implements used to help sustain communities in drier and less developed parts of the world. The fog flows through the sheets and they pull the water from it, transferring it to a collectible trough. It’s then run through carbon filtration before being added to the raw spirit. The base of the vodka is distilled from wine made from biodynamic Bay Area grapes from Bonny Doon Vineyards. Even after distillation, it’s apparently noticeably different from other vodkas, with “hints of pear, citrus, and honeysuckle,” according to the website.

Unsurprisingly, Shoemaker was only able to harvest enough fog to make 2,400 bottles, each with a $125 price tag. Hokey or not, it’s for a good cause: All proceeds will be donated back to FogQuest in recognition of the drought that so heavily affected the Bay Area and rest of California.
