I loved my grandmother. And so did the folks at Black Shirt Brewing Company.

That’s why they named their imperial red rye IPA—aka Red Evelyn—after their grandmother. And each year, the brewery releases this wonderful brew on her birthday.

In a town that makes plenty of interesting beers, I’d have to say that Red Evelyn is one of the Mile High City’s most distinctive beers. With a red hue and a pronounced hop bitterness, Red Evelyn throws in added complexity with the addition of rye to the malt bill. That means you’ll get a spiciness with a touch of dryness, too. Last year’s version of Red Evelyn weighed in at 9.32% ABV with a whopping 93 IBUs—a measure of bitterness—and gave your tongue a workout. There’s no reason to expect any less of the beer in 2015.

Red Evelyn is one of Denver’s cult beers. It’s only brewed once a year, and it doesn’t stick around on shelves or at the taproom for long.

The release party will feature two food trucks and two live bands—The Blue Rider and Two Tone Wolf Pack. It’ll be on tap at the party, but you can also buy bombers of the brew, and I highly suggest you do.

This year’s release party is this August 15 from 2 to 10 PM. There’s no cover, just pay for your beers. And while you’re at it, you might as well pay your grandmother a visit.
