Colorado's Best Beers for Summertime Sipping
In the summertime, Colorado is hot — and it's not because of all the freshly legal sparking-up going on. Colorado summers are dry and can feature triple-digit heat. On those days, only the most dedicated beer snobs can stomach a heavy stout or double IPA.
Here's some summer-only beers that won't weigh you down — before or after the lawn gets mowed or at the end of a long hike or rocking it near the stage at a music festival.
Bristol Brewing's Yellow Kite (5.25 percent ABV), a summer pilsner, comes replete with crisp German and Czech hops. Available April–October, Yellow Kite is perfect the state’s unpredictable weather.
Odell's St. Lupulin (6.5 percent ABV) is an extra pale ale with a hop profile that keeps things crisp and clean like a whitewater rapids run. Available May–September.
Blue Moon’s Summer Honey Wheat (5.2 percent ABV) has had several different names over the years and has come and gone like a journeyman relief pitcher. But the 2010 GABF gold medal winner is back for 2014.
Great Divide produces Heyday (5.2 percent ABV), a Belgian White ale from July–August for Belgian lovers and Rumble (7.1 percent ABV), an oak-aged IPA from April–June. Rumble’s perfect for people won't let the summer sun keep them from a hop blast.
Breckenridge Brewery's SummerBright (4.5 percent ABV) is one of the more flavorful summer wheat beers even though it’s a pretty light affair. Available April–August, SummerBright is a good poolside brew.
New Belgium’s Summer Helles (5 percent ABV) is the best lawn mower beer on this list. A clean German lager, Summer Helles finishes off the yard work with the best of them.
If none of these brews quench your summer thirst, it’s time for you to start praying to the gods of winter.
