Smoke 'Em If Ya Got 'Em: Where to Celebrate 4/20 in Denver
Unless you’ve been living under a rock these last few months, you are aware that Colorado has legalized recreational marijuana, which means for some of us, a holiday of sorts is coming up. This Sunday is 4/20 and to celebrate Denver will be having some special events. So smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em.
4/20 Rally (Civic Center Park)
For the second year in a row, the city has approved the festival permit for the 4/20 Rally to be held at Civic Center Park downtown April 19 and 20. The event, which has been going on for years unsanctioned, will feature live music all day both days and this year's headliners are Wyclef, B.O.B., The Expendables and Zion I. To attend the event is free, but food vendors are pay as you go. There will also be a MJ marketplace for supplies, seminars and artwork all related to the cannabis industry. Two things to remember for this event: Public consumption of marijuana is ILLEGAL so no smoking in the park and expect a heavy police presence.
Festibowl (El Charrito, Armoury, Bar*Bar and 7th Circle)
This event is being held for the third year in a row on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 18-20, and features live music at four different venues around downtown. There will also be comedians and live art. This festival is run completely by volunteers so donations of $5-10 are appreciated to help pay for the bands. For the full music lineup, visit the Festibowl Facebook page.
Fillmore Auditorium (1510 Clarkson; 303-837-1482)
Guess who’s in town this week? Cheech and Chong will be performing at the famous Fillmore on Thursday, April 17. The Fillmore is calling it “the smokiest night of the year.” Show starts at 7 PM. Tickets still available online or by phone.
Central Bistro (1691 Central St.; 303-477-4582)
Smokedown Porch Party is on Saturday, April 19, from 2 to 7 PM. This special dinner includes $4.20 drink specials all day and $9 pulled pork sandwiches. For $25, get the unlimited roasted hog plate with sides and all the fixin’s. There will also be live music by Mike Maurer.
Moe's Bowling and BBQ (3295 S. Broadway)
Headed West's 420 Customer Appreciation Party on Saturday, April 19, will feature live music, raffle prizes and a bowling tournament. Moe's BBQ will offer $4.20 food and drink specials all day. Tickets for the music show are $8 and starts at 6 PM.
Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret (1601 Arapahoe St.; 303-293-0075)
4/20 Marijuana Follies Burlesque Revue is Sunday, April 20 at 7:30 PM at Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret. The show will include a little "up in smoke" themed comedy, a discussion with marijuana industry insiders about different hot topics, and themed burlesque dancing. Tickets are $15.
Red Rocks Amphitheatre (18300 W. Alameda Pwy., Morisson)
It’s no surprise that some of music’s “dopest” acts will be performing this weekend outdoors at Red Rocks in Morrison. Saturday, April 19, is Slightly Stoopid and Sunday, April 20, is Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa. Sandwiched in between these shows will be Red Rocks’ annual Easter Sunday Sunrise Service at 6 AM Sunday.
Here’s where NOT to go on 4/20: The University of Colorado Boulder campus will be closed.
