Satchel's Has a New Liquor License and New Cocktails to Match
Head east on 6th Avenue from downtown, and tucked in a residential area between Cheeseman Park and the Denver Country Club you will find Satchel’s on 6th. This quaint neighborhood bistro is celebrating a shiny new liquor license and you get to drink the rewards. Bar manager Jessica Poole and her staff have put together an eclectic cocktail menu made to match the fresh, seasonally available local food offerings. Here is just a sample of what Satchel’s has to offer.
The Balsamic Bourbon is a unique twist on the whiskey or bourbon sour. Poole says she found a recipe online for Balsamic simple syrup and knew she had to try it in a cocktail. The results are completely unique, yet totally familiar. The Balsamic Bourbon uses basil, ginger beer and that unusual balsamic simple syrup to craft a drink that starts out fresh and herbal and then finishes smoky and sweet. You can taste the balsamic, just barely, but it blends well with the bourbon and ginger beer. This is a must try cocktail for the exploratory drinker, yet regular bourbon connoisseurs will enjoy it too.
The MarTeani uses Earl Grey-steeped gin and lemon with a sugar-rimmed martini glass. The taste of this cocktail is tart and tangy with a buttery mouthfeel. As one drinks the cocktail the taste changes to citrusy and then to smoky-flavored tea. Use the sugar rim to sweeten the cocktail as you go.
The Cranberry Old Fashioned is a fruity take on the classic cocktail. The cocktail contains cranberry, bourbon, orange, clove, and allspice making for a seasonally savvy drink that will go with any holiday meal. All sorts of tastes are going on in this drink – the sweetness of the fruit, the pungent touch of fall spices and the haze of the bourbon.
Specialty cocktails for fall include the frothy Harvest Martini made with lemongrass pear vodka and pear nectar and the sweet and tangy Candy Man made with cherry liqueur, bourbon, ginger beer and OPP (Other People’s Pinot). Specialty cocktails do change regularly so check the chalkboard to see what is offered.
