Happy Hour Crawl: Lo-Hi
Here's an idea for a bar crawl that's easily accessible from the new Union Station Light Rail Station, so no matter what part of the metro area you live you can enjoy one of Denver’s best happy hours. Next to the station, there is a neighborhood nestled in between LoDo and the Highlands with the South Platte River running through it. Called Lo-Hi, the area offers an eclectic mix of places tp drink. Bicycles are allowed on the light rail, or there are two B-Cycle stations nearby for those who don’t feel like walking. Here’s what you can enjoy during happy hour on the Lo-Hi loop (remember to crawl responsibly).
McLoughlin’s: Right over the bridge from Union Station is McLoughlin’s. Start in this Riverfront Park bar, because happy hour begins at 3 PM. Happy hour also features two-for-one wines by the glass and two-for-one draft beers, plus $7 and $8 small plates. From McLoughlin’s walk across Riverfront Park, cross the bridge over the South Platte River and take a right at Platte Street (2100 16th St.; 303-573-5131).
Denver Beer Company: With a master brewer and a rocket scientist for founders, people know they can find unique mix of beers here. Try the famous Kaffir Lime Wheat or the Graham Cracker Porter from the regular rotation of beers or try one of the special seasonal brews. For those not in a hurry, play a game of Battleship or Yahtzee while sitting at the outdoor picnic tables. You’ll pass the B-Cycle station on the way here if anyone needs to pick up a bike (1695 Platte St.; 303-433-2739).
Paris on the Platte: Just east a block away on Platte Street from DBC is Paris on the Platte, a French café and wine bar. The restaurant has an extensive wine list from which to choose $5 glasses for happy hour. The Paris House Red and the Paris House White are both made in Colorado. Happy hour also features $3 drafts and $6-$8 small plates (1553 Platte Street; 303-455-2451).
My Brother’s Bar: Continue west another block on Platte Street to the corner of 15th Street. Even though there is no sign above the door, you’ve found the right place. If you didn’t eat at Paris on the Platte, than this is the place to grab a burger to go with your happy hour beer or cocktail. (2376 15th St; 303-455-9991).
Zengo: Walk south on 15th Street again crossing over the South Platte River to Little Raven Street, take a left and walk east along Riverfront Park for one block. End your journey where it began across the plaza from McLoughlin’s. Zengo provides a blend of Asian and Latin foods and the bar specializes in mojitos. Get here before 7 PM to enjoy $5 mojitos and $5 small plates (1610 Little Raven St.; 720-904-0965).
