World of Beer Opens in Cherry Creek
Finding a great beer bar in Denver is about as tough as finding porn on the internet. But a new contender in Denver’s crowded drinking scene — World of Beer — aims to take its share of the local beer drinker’s market with simple strategy: variety.
World of Beer offers an expansive list of 50 beers on tap and 500 in bottles and cans. Yes, 500. It adds up to one of the best beer selections in Denver. Prices on drafts currently range from $5–$9 and bottles run anywhere from $4 up to a rare Belgian ale at $32. Throw in 17 televisions and not only is Word of Beer a great place to try a new brew, it’s a great place to watch sports — as evidenced by a smattering of soccer fans watching the U.S. vs. Mexico World Cup qualifier on a recent evening.
Seasoned beer geeks will enjoy the expansive menu of foreign beers — particularly Belgian and German varieties — but Colorado and American craft beer aficionados will find plenty to drink as well. The menu is divided into sections according to a beer’s country or state of origin, making it far easier to locate a good ale or lager than it is to read a beer label from Stone. World of Beer also plans to serve beers from casks and nitro taps. Through the smartphone app, patrons can keep up with events as well as what’s currently pouring.
World of Beer is located in a redevelopment at a prime location along Colorado Boulevard in Glendale, just a short distance from the posh Cheery Creek area. There’s a large bar with of plenty of other seating throughout. Most of the enthusiastic staff demonstrates exuberance for what they pour, and we’re sure will continue to learn the finer points of ales and lagers — it was pretty easy to overlook the server who told us a doppelbock was a Belgian style. Non-beer fans will have to make do with a limited wine selection, and folks looking for liquor will have to take their hardened livers elsewhere. The menu includes a selection of beer shots and a few other beer concoctions for the blenders out there. World of Beer doesn’t make its own edibles, but a bevy of local restaurants deliver. (Tip: order a pie from the New York Pizzeria over on Leetsdale Drive.)
A Denver outlet in a national chain of beer taverns, World of Beer is currently in its soft opening phase, but plans to stage a grand opening event on April 20. While the competition is tough, beer drinkers won’t have any problems trekking to this delightful “Beer-vana” (660 S. Colorado Blvd.; no phone yet).
