2013 Preview: 5 New Bars We're Excited to Welcome to Denver
As Denver continues to grow, so does its food and drink scene. This year promises to showcase innovative and interesting new bars and restaurants for all tastes and budgets. Here are five unique places due to launch in the very near future. Which one are you most looking forward to?
The Armoury: Opened on New Year’s Eve, The Armoury is touted as Denver’s first and only soccer bar. However, there's much more to this place, opened in the former Euphoria Lounge. Named after the club store in Emirates Stadium where the Arsenal play, The Armoury plans to offer lots of football (of the European kind) on the TVs, and even have a shuttle bus to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park for Colorado Rapids games. Beer and sandwiches are served from 6 AM on, so no soccer fan has an excuse for missing the best games around the world. At night the venue turns into a music club, further boosting the European vibe (2048 Larimer St.; 303-295-0215).
Brendan’s Pub: A newly reincarnated pub is set to open in January in a very beloved space — the home of the former Club 404 on South Broadway — which makes people both excited and nervous. Club 404 was a Denver steakhouse institution and closed in 2012 after 60 years in business. Brendan’s owner Kevin Geraghty plans to get a cabaret license for live music and is working on menu featuring comfort food (404 Broadway).
Old Major: With a motto of “Seafood, Swine and Wine,” what more do you need? Located in the Highlands in a space that used to house a roller rink, this new bistro should open any day and will feature a meat curing room that people can actually look into. Creator Justin Brunson says Old Major will feature wine taps pouring vintages from his friends at Infinite Monkey Theorem, including wines made especially for the restaurant (3316 Tejon St.).
The Pioneer Bar: College students, we haven’t forgotten about you. The Pioneer Bar is Denver’s newest college bar, located on University Boulevard next to Denver University. Named after the DU mascot, the pub is full of colorful vinyl booths and DU paraphernalia but is lacking — as it says on the website — “that stale barf smell.” The Pioneer specializes in tasty tacos, big burritos and frosty margaritas (2401 S. University Blvd.; 720-536-4802).
Southern Hospitality: This upscale BBQ joint featuring down home vittles actually got its start in New York City. Wait, what? Southern Hospitality was developed by Renaissance man Justin Timberlake as a way to introduce the Big Apple to true Southern-style BBQ. SH Denver will showcase Memphis BBQ with pulled pork sandwiches, southern fried catfish and baby back ribs along with a staggering wine list and the largest selection of bourbons and whiskeys Mile High has to offer. Denver is the first franchise outside of NYC and the third overall of this new eatery. Set to open this month, Southern Hospitality will be located at the St. Elmo Hotel at 17th Avenue and Blake Street in LoDo (1433 17th St.).
