Get Adventurous with Philly's Funkiest Bar Bites

It’s a nose-to-tail dining world, and we’re just living in it. You’re probably familiar with some of the bars and restaurants below for their great drink options, but have you tried some of the more unique items on their menus? Unleash your adventurous spirit and give some of these delicious bar snacks a try.

Let’s start at the head. Tacos. Everyone loves tacos. But what about Cabeza Tacos? In the Italian Market, Blue Corn is serving up some amazing Mexican food, plus they’ve got a sweet little bar and are generous with the tequila portions. Get some liquid courage in you and try roasted cow head (cabeza) tacos. Score three tacos for $8.

Staying in the heady taco territory, South Philly Tap Room has Head Cheese Tacos. Don’t let the name fool you, there’s no dairy involved in this. It’s a meaty pig terrine, baby. Grab them for $1 each, and wash some down with a nice pint of beer.

Over at the empire of hearty, meaty dishes on North Broad Street, Alla Spina has Pig’s Head Bruschetta for half off on their happy hour menu. Try it alongside a $3 Brooklyn Lager or a $7 Negroni on tap.

At The Industry Bar in Pennsport you can give some Crispy Pig Ears ($6) a try along with a house shot of Jim Beam Black Bourbon straight from the barrel ($4).

In the tail division, Cheu Noodle Bar in Washington Square West just added BBQ Pig Tails with turnip kimchi and sesame ($9) to their small plates menu. Pro-tip, order one of the Cheu Noodle’s special iced teas and add a shot of your spirit of choice for $7.

Up in Manayunk, Taqueria Feliz has Lamb Heart Skewers ($6.95). And for something really special, they’re pioneers in the entomology division (that’s bugs for you). Try the Tacos De Chapulines ($6.95). Very crisp! For happy hour, they have $3 select drafts and beer bottles, $5.50 margs, $4 house wine and sangria and $2 off speciality cocktails. Those specials are sure to help you wash down the grasshoppers.

Fried Duck Skins ($6) are on the Bar Snacks menu of Fishtown’s Lloyd Whiskey Bar. This place usually has some great drink specials under $10 for happy hour. If you can’t make it for happy hour, we recommend getting The Lloyd, which is a nice bottle of the champagne of beers with a shot of Old Grand-Dad whiskey for $5.

In Center City, try the Chopped Liver on toasted rye with pastrami-onion jam during Abe Fisher’s crazy good $7 (plates, wines by the glass and cocktails), seven days a week happy hour. Cocktails here are all about amari, aka bitter liqueurs. Give The Bitter End (Cocchi Americano, Cynar and Campari) or the smoky Bonfire (Siembra Azul Blanco, Sombra Mezcal, Yellow Chartreuse, Honey, Laphroaig rinse) a try.

All for one, offal for all! Happy eating.
